Excursions

The Club de Mar arranges dolphin and whale watching excursions in small fisherman's boats. Boats leave daily at 10 am and return at approximately 2pm, and in high season from 4pm until approximately 8pm. Please check the current price before booking a trip.

During the trip we observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Of course we are not able to do this every day. The dolphins do not perform tricks such as jumping through hoops and it is not possible to stroke the whales or ride them. These creatures are not a tourist attraction and cannot be trained or fed by humans. We cannot guarantee that we will see them on every tour we arrange. People who are interested in going on a trip should bear this in mind. "If we see a herd of whales" says Captain Claudio, next day will be a queue of people at the entrance of our business. "You should have come yesterday" says Captain Claudio. "But yesterday we didn't know there would be some sperm whales out there". We didn't either. This is because nobody can predict if we'll see some or not so we concentrate on enjoying the experience for what it is. However, we are able to observe some sea creatures on about 80% of our excursions. We do not always see whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, marlines or other large fish, but as a general rule we at least see one or more than one species at a time.

It is important to mention that although there was an agreement in 1982 to ban the capture of whales according to an international treaty, only three years ago Greenpeace proved that Norway, Japan, and the former republics of the Soviet Union, were still capturing whales indiscriminately. Unfortunately the situation remains unchanged. In the Faroe islands of Denmark a large number of whales are captured each day, year after year. Also in Iceland whales are being captured supposedly for scientific study but this is no more than a cover up. 14 000 whales were killed for this so called scientific study. Also in Japan 6 700 whales were captured over the last 6 years, and they have now directed their attention to dolphins. And our European neighbours? Is it right that excluding Norway, Iceland and Denmark, there is no more fishing for whales, or killing them? Although it is not more excusable for fisherman to drag their boats with massive fishing nets in which the cetaceans die, unable to breath. 600 Italian boats leave year after year to capture the swordfish in the Mediterranean, although sadly only 18 per cent of their catch is actually the swordfish , the other 82 per cent is what results in the killing of around 8 000 dolphins every year. Then the dead or hurt animals are returned to the sea. Fortunately this does not happen in the Canary Islands. There is no whale fishing, net fishing, nor anything else of significant danger. The sea life in the Canary Islands is strictly protected. The visits to their natural habitats are regulated by the maritime authorities. The Club de Mar works closely with animal protection organisations which involves the fight for the protection of our dolphins and whales. If you become one of our customers, we would like to convince you to join our struggle to help and protect these vulnerable sea creatures.
